Project: Walk out of the shopping mall without stopping to pay!
I, as usual, decided to do something way different and finally this is what came in my mind; to make a kind of box setup (more like an xray machine) where your products are scanned & the transaction amount get automatically deducted from ones credit card. Yes it did have a diverse set of domains involved, but I was way more than happy and filled with excitement to get started with it with my pal, Google.
The motivation behind this idea was to automate the whole buying process in shopping malls without the need of those people at counters.
What I actually wanted to build was, a box setup, with two or three cameras used for scanning, an Arduino for the detection of products, activation of the rollers & triggering of the entire program. Since the course was ‘databases’ I had to use some kind of database in this & so decided to use the Oracle SQL database and integrate it with the whole application for storage purposes.
Started of with building the UI with swing. Once that was done, used JDBC to integrate the database with the java application. Then, worked on building the whole setup, it didn’t turn out the way it was in my mind, but it was good enough to some extent.
The hardware part included an Arduino, with an LDR connected to it to which a laser pointer points at all times. Once the Arduino detects an obstacle, the rollers role and move the product forward (supposed to do this, couldn’t make this roller part of it) the cameras scan the product in the queue & match it with the images on the database.
Here comes the most interesting and my favorite part of this project. Developed a very fast & efficient feature detection interface which one could implement in their applications easily. It was mostly based on the theory of AKAZE algorithm, but with a couple of modifications which would optimize it for this application specifically. The matching was done in multiple threads which made it even more fast.
Joining up these pieces simply made this project a big success.
